My favourite this week has been cinnamon. A perfect spice for this time of year, and so versatile. Even the smell of cinnamon makes me feel all festive and the best part of it is, it has so many health benefits.

It may be surprising to some, but just one teaspoon of cinnamon has 28mg of calcium and is full of vitamin K and C, as well as magnesium.

Cinnamon has long been used in medicine to help relieve digestion and bloating and it has recently been found to have a mild anti-inflammatory effect.

The good news for diabetics is that cinnamon has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity from simply having half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day. Because it stabilises blood sugar levels, it controls your hunger too.

Most people only associated cinnamon with baking, but it is great in savoury dishes, such as Moroccan food and one of my personal favourites, in coffee. But, I mostly us is for baking. Perfect in this apple crisp or to spice up these Christmas biscuits.

Keep a look out for a mulled apple drink coming soon. Cinnamon will definitely be featured in it!

There are some side effects of cinnamon if you eat too much of it, you can find them here: http://www.healthdiaries.com/eatthis/side-effects-of-cinnamon.html
