Gingerbread Honey Hot Chocolate

December 21, 2015 by Dannii 146 Comments

This Gingerbread Honey Hot Chocolate is the ultimate Christmas hot chocolate. That is a bold statement, but it’s true. It’s warming, full of festive spice, and healthier than most of the hot chocolates that you can buy.

Gingerbread Honey Hot Chocolate 4

There really has been a lot of ginger going on over here the past month, but that is not something to apologise for, as it’s the best Christmas spice. If you are a little bit addicted to the gingerbread drinks in Starbucks, then this is something for you to try out at home and save yourself some money, and calories.

Before I get in to the main part of the post, I just want to wish you all a VERY merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. This is going to be my last blog post of 2015 and I am taking a much needed break from blogging. I love this blog, probably more than I should, but these 2 weeks off are going to be amazing and I fully intend to do not much at all. I will be back on January 4th (although I will be out of the country for Dave’s surprise birthday trip) and it will be the start of an amazing year on HHH with lots of great recipes, so make sure you come back to see. I will still of course be posting on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, so follow me there for festive updates. Eat, drink, be merry and most of all enjoy time with the people you love.

Gingerbread Honey Hot Chocolate 2

Speaking of love, I love this hot chocolate. I am a big fan of hot drinks in general, as you can tell if you opened my tea cupboard (yes, I have a whole cupboard dedicated to tea), but there is just something extra special about hot chocolate, especially when it is topped with cream. Did you know that you can buy reduced fat squirty cream? Sure, it still isn’t the healthiest thing, but it will save you some calories when it comes to your festive hot drinks.

For this recipe, I have teamed up with Caprera, who are an artisian food and drink marketplace. They aim to let people reconnect with nature, remember their roots and the origins of food by enhancing interactions between artisan food lovers and small independent producers. I am all for supporting independent producers, so I was looking forward to trying out their products. I love that when you click on each of their products, it tells you a little but about the company it has come from, which makes it really feel like you are buying locally.

All of the products on the Caprera website are high-end and they are made in small batches by the independent producers, so you know that lots of love has gone in to making everything. They have a great online magazine too, with lots of delicious recipes. They have a fab selection of meat and cheese, preserves, oils and seasonings and confectionery. If you care about where your food and drink comes from, go and put in an order with Caprera.

When they sent me some honey to try out, I just knew I had to make a hot drink with it immediately. I love the flavour that honey adds to hot drinks and of course there is all the health benefits of honey too. Honey is medicinal, chocolate is medicinal, this hot chocolate is practically a health drink!

Gingerbread Honey Hot Chocolate 1

We had lots of festive things planned for the past week, however our cat Chilli has been really unwell (he had to stay in the pet hospital for a while and have part of the skin on his head cut out), so he is now at home wearing a cone round his head and feeling very sorry for himself. We have to keep an eye on it, which means not leaving him alone, so we have been staying in and enjoying lots of hot chocolate in front of the Christmas tree and getting lots of cat cuddles.

Ingredients – Serves 2:

– 800ml almond milk

– 4 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

– 2 tbsp honey

– 1 tsp vanilla extract

– 0.5 tsp ground ginger

– 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon

– Reduced fat squirty cream (optional)

1) Put all of the ingredients in to a pan and bring to the boil and then simmer for 3 minutes.

2) Pour in to glasses/mugs and top with cream and some extra cocoa powder

I have never heard or thought about adding honey to hot chocolate, I do love honey though and will use it in a lot of things. I am not a keen of ginger but love the rest of the ingredients so could see how this is without the ginger x
