I never thought that I would be able to turn my hobby and passion into a career, but that is what I am training to do and I am so excited. Today I start my personal training course with The Training Room and although after finishing my degree I swore that I would never take any more courses or do any more exams, that is exactly what I am doing. I guess I never thought I would find something that I wanted to do so much that it would change my mind.
I was originally going to do the part-time blended learning course at one of the training centres, as there is no way I could have fit the fast-track course into my already overflowing schedule (although if you want to be a qualified personal trainer in just 6 weeks, then this is a really good option), but the location just wasn’t suitable for me, so I am now doing the home learning academy e-learning course. This has actually worked out much better for me as I can fit it round my schedule. It does mean I am going to have to get super organised though and plan myself out a timetable to stick to, so that I stay on top of everything. That wasn’t my best skill at uni, but I think I am more organised now than I was then. Another good thing about doing the online course is that you can start at any time, although the fast-track and blended learning courses have lots of different start dates.
One of the things I love about The Training Room course is that there are free re-sits. I am hoping I won’t need to take any, but you never know. Another thing I really like is that there is support every step of the way and they don’t just help you to become qualified, but they help you to get a job after by giving you help with your CV (mine definitely needs updating) and helping you with placements and jobs after. So it is not like you finish the course and then you are on your own to figure it out.
So, what does this course cover? Well, I am studying for Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing which covers anatomy and physiology for exercise, supporting clients, health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment, planning and instructing gym based exercise. After that I move on to Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Fitness Instructing which covers more advanced anatomy and physiology, nutrition and delivering personal training sessions. After that I will study for a certificated in studio cycling (spinning), circuit training, sports nutrition and gym based boxing. There is a lot to learn, but that is a good thing as it gives you more job opportunities after and a better understanding of health and fitness.
It will take between 3-6 months to complete the course, but you go at your own pace. I am hoping to have finished by Christmas, but I am not going to put too much pressure on myself to do it quickly, as I would rather do it well than quickly.
I shall be blogging every couple of weeks about the course to keep people updated on how I am getting on and what I am learning. After I am qualified, as well as getting a job as a personal trainer, I shall be doing some at home HHH workout videos for you all – so keep a look out for that.
Right, I am off to read all the information I got sent to get started on the course. Wish me luck!
