It was our 12 year anniversary yesterday, so in the interest of trying to save some money, I cooked us a feast. I was really wanting Greek/Mediterranean food, with lots of different small dishes – so that is exactly what I made. A meze is a selection of small dishes that are served in the Mediterranean/Middle East.
I’m not going to lie, it took several house to make this as everything was made from scratch, but it was so worth it. You don’t have to make them all at the same time, but if you want to make a really special meal that you would pay a fortune for at a restaurant, then this is it. It would also be a nice selection to make if you were having friends over. The Greeks are known for being very sociable eaters and meals are an occasion to be shared with the ones you love, which is the way it should be in my opinion.
This was all pretty healthy too. There was some cheese in there, but as long as you are not eating cheese all day everyday, you will be fine and this meal won’t derail you. This is a lot of food, and there were only 2 of us, which meant we have lots of leftovers for the next couple of days (I love leftovers).
I am going to be uploading the recipes for all of these dishes over the coming week or so (didn’t want to bombard you with them all in one day), but I thought I would give you a little teaser now. I made the following (from left to right, top to bottom):
- Hummus
- Greek salad
- Tzatziki
- Turkish beetroot salad
- Avocado salad
- Tabouleh with grilled halloumi
- Chicken skewers (the marinade for this was amazing)
- A healthy chocolate pudding (with an unusual ingredient)
What recipe are you most looking forward to seeing out of this? I would be excited about the chocolate pudding if I was you
