Why You Should Try Hydrotherapy After a Workout

If you’re aged between 19 and 64, the NHS advises that you partake in at least two and a half hours of exercise every week, with at least two days or more focusing on muscle strengthening activities.

In short, the NHS is telling us to go to the gym (or thereabouts).

Although this in itself is great, after a good workout, it is important that both the mind and body is relaxed into the evening and a session in a hot tub can dramatically help relieve stress and pain in the body.

How does hydrotherapy work?

This is a very good question and the truth is that both buoyancy and temperature work together to help sooth aching muscles and joints, improve circulation and reduce overall stress.

Thanks to the fact that you are weightless while in the water, this takes pressure off the body and can even help sooth those suffering from arthritis, as pressure will also be taken off the afflicted joints.

What about tight muscles?

If you feel that your muscles are particularly tight or sore after a workout, then hydrotherapy is a great way of relieving the pain as warm water naturally loosens tight muscles and improves motion, especially when a massaging jet is involved.

Some say that it can help diabetes?

The truth is that people with diabetes are simply more likely to form some kind of cardiovascular disease and such afflictions can be greatly reduced with the aid of a regular spa session, as they help reduce blood pressure in the body.

Despite this however, hydrotherapy is seen as an alternative therapy for the condition, and should be viewed only as a light aid and not as a primary treatment.

But hydrotherapy may well aid sleep

After a rigorous workout, though the body is tired, it still needs to warm down and this can be done through hydrotherapy.

More importantly, by doing this you may also find that the quality of your sleep will have improved as hydrotherapy also offers a relaxation of the mind, which can help for those who suffer from active minds before bedtime.

Try a fifteen minute session before you go to sleep each night to see if it works. Remember at the same time however, to stay clear of televisions, mobile phones, computers and any other electronics, as they can cause your brain to delay vital processes needed to begin the sleeping process.

    Myself and my friend always spend 30 minutes in the spa area of our gym after our workout. A few weeks ago it was shut, so we couldn’t use it and the next day I really noticed a difference from not using it. I still did some stretched after, but I think the hot water and the steam really helped to ease my muscles.

    If you don’t have access to a hot tub or steam room (the one at my gym is always being “fixed”) then foam rolling helps with tight muscles.

    We treated ourselves to an outside hot tub last year as we had been saving up for a while. Not ideal in winter, but on a summer night it is bliss.
