Don’t think of sandwiches as just a boring lunch time option, as there is so much more that you can do with them! Turn them in to a party food by making an open sandwich and serving them on a fancy spoon.
Imagine your party guests turning up and expecting sausage rolls or cheese and pineapple on a stick and you serve up some of these. Let’s face it, anything served up in a spoon instantly gets the thumbs up as you don’t end up spilling it down yourself and it means your guests don’t fill themselves up before the main event.

Don’t worry, we haven’t turned all fancy over here at HHH and neither have we been having loads of fabulous parties (most of our nights are PJs in front of the TV eating leftovers). The recipe came out of a challenge that Heinz set us to celebrate the launch of their Seriously Good Mayonnaise. They challenged us to come up with a recipes that uses their mayonnaise and fits on a spoon. Now, my first thought was “can I just serve something on a giant ladle?”, but that wouldn’t have looked very pretty now would it! We got this tapas set with these cute little spoons at Christmas and they were the perfect spoon to use for this challenge.
Do you have some ideas of a recipes that you could serve on a spoon? Well, join in with the challenge over on the Heinz Website. They want you to come up with a #heinzseriouslygood recipe that fits on a spoon – all you have to do is share your recipe on social media using the hashtag and they will shortlist their favourites.
Heinz Seriously Good Mayonnaise is always the first choice in our house as if we are going to eat something with mayonnaise, it has to be the best. It’s rich, smooth and creamy and the ingredients list is surprisingly short too. They use the best quality ingredients with no added colours, flavours or artificial thickeners.
I would happily eat some kind of sandwich every day, but I am trying to limit bread to just a few times a week rather than every day, but that’s what is so good about an open sandwich, as you use half the bread. I am a little bit obsessed with adding watercress to dishes as well, as I think it not only adds some crunch, but it has a hint of spiciness too.
We don’t post many crab recipes here at HHH, but you will be seeing a lot more as we always have some kind of canned fish in the cupboard to make a quick and healthy meal, and crab is a new favourite for us – especially when paired with some Heinz Seriously Good Mayonnaise.
Ingredients – Serves 10 (as party food):
– 1 can of shredded crab
– 2 tbsp Heinz Seriously Good Mayonnaise
– 1 tbsp horseradish sauce
– A handful of watercress
– 2 slices of sourdough bread
– A pinch of sea salt and black pepper
1) Cut 2 circles out of the bread and arrange put them on serving spoons.
2) In a bowl, mix together the crab, mayonnaise, horseradish sauce and salt and pepper.
3) Put the watercress on top of the bread and top with the crab mixture and serve.
Let’s stay in touch!
